Education
The Magic Suitcase Print

The Association of Desk and Derrick Clubs designed this program to educate laymen, children, and the general public about the positive aspects of the oil  and gas industry and its contributions to the world as we know it today.  It also stresses the importance of recycling and caring for our environment.  It is a wonderful presentation with incredible potential for educating the community about our use of and dependency on the products that come from oil.  Since its inception, The Magic Suitcase has been presented to over 10,000 children and adults.

The presentation takes the audience through a typical day and points out many of the petrochemical products that we use every day- it's a petrochemical treasure chest!  Many of the items we use daily are pulled from the suitcase and are put on display for the audience over the course of the presentation.  The presentation is humorous and includes several science experiments that hold the attention of the audience. The experiments include:

  • Mixing three liquids to make a solid, which produces a rubber ball.
  • Selective dying demonstration
  • Bending light with an acrylic rod
  • Insta-Snow! A super absorbent polymer that turns water into a white fluffy substance that expands to 100 times its weight in water!

All experiments are safe and have been approved to demonstration in the public school system.  Only trained demonstrators are authorized to perform these experiments.

Presentations are arranged through the Desk and Derrick Club of Denver's Public Perception Committee and all presenters are members of the Club and have received special training.

The Committee is registered with the Denver Public Schools Community Resources, Inc., which connects teacher requests with community professionals.  Many of their presentations are from repeat requests.  The Magic Suitcase presentation takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour.  It is a great fit for a science unit, natural resources unit, as well as Earth Day (April 22nd) and Energy Awareness Month (October).  We include handouts (Bit of Fun Energy Activity Book) for both students and teachers to complement the presentation.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule a presentation, please contact Ted Kendall at Fidelity Exploration and Production Company (720-931-6444) or Mari Clark at Nobel Energy, Inc. (303-228-4413).  Click here to download the Magic Suitcase flyer (PDF).
