The Association of Desk and Derrick Clubs designed this program to educate laymen, children and the general public about the positive aspects of the oil and gas industry; and its contributions to the world as we know it today.  It also stresses the importance of recycling and caring for our environment. It is a wonderful presentation with incredible potential for educating the community about our use of and dependency on the products that come from oil.  The Magic Suitcase stresses the importance of recycling and caring for our environment.  Since its inception, the Magic Suitcase has been presented to over 10,000 children and adults.

The presentation takes the audience through a typical day and points out many of the petrochemical products that we use every day.  The presentation is humorous and includes several science experiments that hold the attention of the audience.  The experiments include:

• Mixing three liquids to make a solid (rubber ball)
• Selective dying demonstrations
• How to bend light (with an acrylic rod)
• Liquid nitrogen:  freeze and shatter a flower, deflate and re-inflate a balloon and disposal of liquid nitrogen on the floor (it disappears)

All experiments are safe and approved for demonstration in the public school system.  Liquid nitrogen is non-toxic (the air we breathe is 80% nitrogen), but because of the extreme cold temperatures involved, only trained demonstrators are approved to perform these experiments.

Presentations are arranged through the Desk and Derrick Club of Denver’s Public Perception Committee, and all presenters are members of the Club and have received special training.

The Committee is registered with the Denver Public Schools Community Resources, Inc., which connects teacher requests with community professionals.  Many of their presentations are from repeat requests.  The "Magic Suitcase" is a petrochemical 'treasure chest' - actually a trunk.  When the presentation is made, activities of a typical day are described while many of the items used in daily activities are removed from the trunk and displayed.  This presentation takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.  It is a great fit for a science unit, natural resources unit, as well as Earth Day and Energy Awareness Month (October).  It includes handouts for students and teachers (Bit of Fun Energy Activity Book).
